5 Great New Tagging Features in TaxoPress
TaxoPress 3.27 is available now. The Free version is available on WordPress.org and TaxoPress members can download the Pro version from this website.
We’re in November, and so I can safely say this will be our biggest release of 2024. If you have asked us for a new feature, there’s a good chance it’s available in this version.
There are so many improvements that I’m going to choose five to highlight.
Table of Contents
Auto Terms can search anything
The Auto Terms feature can scan your content and automatically assign new and existing terms. Previously it was only possible to scan the title and body of your posts. In this new version, you can also scan any custom fields on your site. You can choose to scan anything in the _postmeta table. For example, you can now scan any content you have stored in plugins such as Advanced Custom Fields, WooCommerce, The Events Calendar, or Easy Digital Downloads.
Here’s a practical example with WooCommerce. You can choose to search the _stock_status field. That allows you to automatically add a term such as “Out of stock” to any product that is labeled as “Out of stock” in WooCommerce.
You can preview results inside Auto Terms
Before you use the Auto Terms feature on your content, it’s now possible to preview the results. There’s a “Preview” tab where you can see the potential results for each post before you go live. There are a lot of settings available in Auto Terms, so this is a safe place to test.
Linked Terms is more flexible
Linked Terms is a feature in TaxoPress Pro that allows you to connect terms. When the main term is added to a post, the linked terms will also be added. It’s now possible to customize the relationship between these terms.
For example, imagine you have a main term called “Fruit” and a linked term called “Apple”. You can decide between multiple options:
- When either “Fruit” or “Apple” is added to a post, the other term is added also.
- When “Fruit” is added to a post, the other term is added.
- When “Apple” is added to a post, the other term is added.
You can now copy terms
On the “Terms” screen, it’s now possible to copy terms. You can click the “Copy” link next to any term. This will create a duplicate term. The duplicate will be attached to the same posts as the original term.
There is also a more advanced “Copy” feature available. If you choose “Copy” from the “Bulk actions” dropdown, you’ll be able to move the duplicates of your terms to a new taxonomy.
There are new blocks
In this version of TaxoPress, you’ll find new Gutenberg blocks for the “Current Post” and “Terms Display” features. Both of these blocks will give you a live preview of the display before you publish the post.
More on TaxoPress Changes
The full changelog for the Free version is on WordPress.org and the changelog for the Pro version is on this site.
In the post for our last release, I mentioned several goals for the last few months of 2024. This release accomplishes several of those goals. We hope to complete two more before the end of this year:
- A new screen to schedule Auto Terms. This allows you to scan large numbers of posts that are imported.
- An upgraded Metaboxes feature so you can control what editors see when they create posts. Below is a screenshot of the metaboxes feature for this post. It’s already possible to remove the default Tags and Categories metaboxes. We’re going to allow you to create your own metaboxes. You’ll be able to present users with a customized list of terms, and you’ll be able to use more advanced displays than the default Tags and Categories metaboxes.
