The Tag Groups Plugin is Now Part of TaxoPress

We first launched TaxoPress because there was a gap in the market. There were no good WordPress plugins to help you organize and categorize your content.

The only existing plugin I could find was called “Tag Groups” by a developer named Christoph Amthor. This was a really useful plugin that allows you to display and filter content based on taxonomy terms.

A few years later, I’m delighted to say that Tag Groups is now part of TaxoPress. If you’re hearing the “TaxoPress” name for the first time, TaxoPress is a plugin that helps you categorize all your WordPress content. You can check out the free version on WordPress.org and find out more about the team behind TaxoPress.

In this post, I’ll start by giving you a quick introduction to the Tag Groups plugin. Then I’ll outline what will change for users of both TaxoPress and Tags Groups.

What does the Tag Groups plugin do?

Yes, Tag Groups does allow you to organize your terms into groups. However, it also works great with flat taxonomies such as WooCommerce product tags. One of the best features of Tag Groups allows users to search and filter your site’s content.

For example, you can use Tag Groups on a cooking site where visitors can search recipes.

Another use-case for the Tags Group plugin is for a photography site where the images are searchable by keywords. In this screenshot below, you can search photos by year, place, or subject. All the searching is based on taxonomy terms.

In addition to the post filters, the Tag Groups plugin also has tons of options for standard term displays. For example, you can use the plugin to create a Tag Cloud, as in this screenshot below:

Tag Groups and TaxoPress

A few weeks ago, I was talking with Christoph and he said he was ready to move on from Tag Groups. Christoph published a post with his reasons and some background details.

So, we’ve come to an agreement to make Tag Groups part of TaxoPress.

Here’s a preview of our plugins:

  • The main TaxoPress plugin will focus on helping you manage taxonomy terms. The Tag Groups plugin will focus on frontend display.
  • The plugin is currently hosted at ChattyMango.com and uses Freemius.com for the license key. We’ll move the demos, documentation, and license keys over here to TaxoPress.com. This will take some time. We expect these moves to be complete by early 2023.

If you have any questions, we’ll be happy to help. Leave a comment or send us an email to [email protected].

Thanks for using TaxoPress.
